Saudi Architecture

Saudi architecture includes a wide range of architectural styles and design elements distributed across the geographical regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Among the most prominent styles are:

Najdi Architecture – Asiri Architecture – Hejazi Architecture – Eastern Coastal Architecture

This represents a spatial documentation of the authentic and diverse architecture found across the different regions of the Kingdom. It aims to highlight the diversity that distinguishes each region based on its geographical, urban, cultural, and climatic characteristics.

The architectural map reflects traditional building methods and demonstrates how they can influence contemporary architectural designs, thereby supporting the continuity of these styles within the Saudi urban landscape through a modern and evolving approach.

Najdi Architectural Style

Najdi Architecture
Najdi architecture originates from the heart of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where its features are shaped by the landscapes of plateaus and fertile valleys. Geographical characteristics play a key role in forming an integrated urban environment and help this architectural style adapt to the contrasting climate of hot summers and cold winters, thereby enhancing the sustainability of buildings.

Traditional Najdi houses are built from sun-dried mud bricks and are distinguished by serrated rooflines coated with white plaster, known as Al-Satrah (Al-Darwah), which protect the mud walls from weather conditions.

Small geometric openings contribute to natural ventilation and daylight, while decorative elements—such as Al-Tarmah, water spouts, and triangular bands—create a harmonious balance between aesthetics and function. Finely carved wooden doors further enhance the architectural character of the buildings, reflecting the authenticity of Najdi architecture and its deep cultural significance

Asiri Architectural Style

Asiri Architectural Style

The architectural style of the Asir Highlands is characterized by its strong ability to adapt to the unique climate and varied terrain of the Sarawat Mountains in the Asir region.

Buildings are distinguished by the use of local materials such as stone and mud bricks and are designed to withstand heavy rainfall and lower temperatures. The structures feature compact masses with geometric forms, flat roofs, and tall, narrow windows that help regulate humidity and temperature. Buildings typically rest on a base of local stone to protect against rain, while the upper façades are constructed from mud to enhance thermal efficiency.

This architectural style is also known for incorporating traditional artistic patterns such as Asiri Cat, adding a rich decorative dimension. Together, these elements aim to create an architectural and urban style that is harmonious with the surrounding natural environment.

Hejazi Architectural Style

Hejazi Architectural Style

Hejazi coastal architecture extends along the Red Sea, shaped by the coastal environment, cultural interaction, and geographical diversity.

Jeddah is considered the largest city in this region and has played a major role as a historic trading port and a key gateway for the exchange of knowledge and expertise. This influence is clearly reflected in its distinctive urban and architectural patterns.

The coastal climate plays a vital role in shaping architectural designs, where rawasheen and projecting balconies enhance natural ventilation, while ornamented windows with small openings achieve a balance between privacy and aesthetic function.

This architectural style is distinguished by clearly defined façades enriched with intricate geometric decorative elements, creating a visually rich character that reflects the spirit and identity of the place

Eastern Coastal Architectural Style

Eastern Coastal Architectural Style

The architectural style of the Eastern Coast is shaped by the Kingdom’s coastal environment and its historical development. Traditional architecture is characterized by the use of solid walls made from coral stone, often coated with white plaster to improve heat resistance. It features large recessed openings with wooden screens, along with mashrabiyas designed to withstand hot and humid climates. Distinctive architectural elements include fine plaster decorations, triple arches, and tall entrances adorned with botanical motifs.

Traditional homes are typically organized around shaded courtyards surrounded by arcades, enhancing privacy and climate adaptability. The traditional Eastern Coastal architectural style can also take on various forms in contemporary architectural designs, allowing these heritage elements to continue influencing modern urban development.
